Starting school is certainly a big deal, it is also a rite of passage, which deserves a celebration!
On Monday 1st February, some of our Kindergarten parents gathered to make beautiful Schultüten for their children.
GISS provided some crafting materials including the very special cones sourced from Germany. There were some amazing creations on the day, and we were excited to celebrate with our Kindergarten at their official Einschulung ceremony.
A huge thank you to Anne Lepschies, Annette Noronha and Kate Rouvray for facilitating this workshop.
The tradition of the Schultüte has its origins in approximately the year 1810 in Saxony, Saxony-Anhalt, and Thuringia. The first documented report of cone-shaped Schultüten comes from the city of Jena in 1817, closely followed by reports from Dresden (1820) and Leipzig (1836). It started in the larger cities but spread quickly to small towns and villages, soon becoming an institution all over Germany .
These Schultüten surely made the first day and transition to 'big school' a very sweet celebration for our 2021 Kindergarten students.
Schultüten - a wonderful German tradition!
