This year, the Year 5 students went on camp to Tea Gardens where they spent an action-packed week.
Read on to see what some of the students wrote about their experiences.

County Fair by Heidi

“Everyone sit on the floor and I’ll tell you how it’ll work,” said Callum our instructor. Everyone sat enthusiastically on the floor “OK so I am going to put you into groups of 4 and one group of 5 then I will assign you to one of the shops.” In my group there was Ella, Sasha W, Ned and Ollie. We were assigned to the game room, Year nail polish, face-painting and massage. I did Frau Bussche’s nails. My favourite event was the bakery and the milkshakes. Sashko let me help with the milkshakes because Griff and Ayrton weren’t helping (He really needed help with the fussy customers.)

Lost Island by your amazing Oliver

Mud… Freezing cold liquid mud. Obstacles almost as hard as army ones with just your every day clothes on. You would probably think that this is really bad but it tests your bravery and endurance. So if your looking to toughen up Lost Island is the place to be. Did I mention that there were slides and cold tap water spraying at us the whole time. I reckon the hardest challenge was the four logs that we had to go under and over I mean putting your head under cold mud in the winter is a bit well lets say awakening.
Also remember this was only one of the tremendous experiences we had at camp.

Giant Swing by Sashko

Up he went into the pitch-black night, all the way to the top, as we all pulled on the black rope. Katie, our instructor, told Nicolas to pull the small, red rope, and as he was letting go of the rope he started swinging, like a rag doll. He started slowing down and then a couple seconds later Katie caught him. The same thing happened (Except for the ones who went halfway) repeatedly. Finally, it was my turn, and I climbed the ladder and got clipped in. Everyone started to pull the rope and I started drifting up into the air. At the top, I pulled the red rope and I started falling to the ground, scared to death. Then I started swinging and I didn’t feel to bad any more so I started relaxing, feeling amazing.

Orienteering by Henry

First, we were split into five groups. Then we were given compass, a clipboard and a course sheet with a bearings and meters on it. After that in our split up groups we followed our different bearings and started going how ever many meters we needed to go. After a long activity I bet everyone had a great time!

Camp Fire by Ned

When it’s a cold night everyone comes out to sit near the big warm fire. At the campfire everyone starts roasting marsh mellows and sometimes we played guessing games. When we are finished the class plays games like 44 homes and piggy in the middle. Next we sit around the fire to see what activity we have doing next.

Canoeing by Ayrton

The first activity that we did at the great Aussie bush camp was canoeing. I liked it because it involved teamwork with your friends, and it was relaxing to cruise on the wide, deep lake. The instructor made us play games and complete various challenges. The instructor first told us the safety procedures before we went into the canoe in the water. After canoeing we had morning tea.

Raft building by Moritz

Last week we were at camp for 1 Week. We went raft building. First the class got split into two teams. Then the instructor gave each team two tires, five wood planks and some strings. Then both teams started building their rafts. When both teams finished their raft we got to look at each others rafts they both looked amazing. Then we did a race. Team A won. The raft of team B was half destroyed.

Food by Griff

At camp, the food was amazing!
On the day we arrived for lunch we had chicken schnitzel burgers with an option of cheese, lettuce, beetroot and shredded carrot. For dinner we had spaghetti bolognaise with garlic bread and an option between red, orange or green cordial and water. That was by far the best lunch and dinner I have had in a while.
The only bad meal that not many people liked was the chicken fried rice for Thursday dinner but apart from that every other meal was delicious!

Tents by Sasha

Have you ever tried falling asleep next to loud noises from cars, water seeping through the roof and your head so close to the person next to you that they could snore into your ear? I can probably guess that you have not. But let me explain to you that it is one of the worst experiences. Last week, year 5 went to the Tea Gardens (Aussie Bush Camp) for class camp. The activities were fun, and most of the food was appetizing, however I was not the biggest fan of one thing in particular: The tents. There were 6, and there are 23 people in our class. The tents weren’t the most spacious, however there were 12 beds (6 bunks), so we had lots of space to get comfortable and organised for showers, the next day, and more. And although this might sound like the tents are roomy, you are very wrong. It is super cramped. My head was so near my neighbour that I heard her breathing, even over the loud noise of cars beeping their horns angrily. Furthermore, it was Winter, so even when it wasn’t raining, it was freezing at night, dropping to temperatures under 7 degrees. So imagine chilly water going ‘drip-drop’ onto your sleeping bag.
So, although the tents were interesting, they weren’t the best tents I’ve been in.

Bushcraft by Marco

In Bushcraft we built little shelters from sticks and logs, and then cooked delicious damper over a huge campfire and ate it with golden maple sirup! It was deliciously fun! On the way, we collected big sticks for the amazing campfire.

Pioneering by Davey  and Kai

At pioneering, we build a working stretcher and a working catapult. We were split into two teams, each team had to build a stretcher and a catapult. We had white metal poles, wood planks and a lot of rope to tie it together. With the stretcher we did a relay race to get tennis balls. Someone had to go on the stretcher, and we would carry the stretcher to a tennis ball lying on the ground and then carry it to the crate. For the catapult to work we got a helmet with elastic stings tied to it to launch the tennis balls we collected with the stretcher. We had to launch the tennis ball into a crate five times two win, but Cal reduced the points to win to three points because no one was scoring. It was amazing.

Flying fox by Mark

Weeee… scary and terrifying the big flying fox. The great flying fox was as high as Big tall standing Giraffe. You had to put on a helmet and a tight blue harness that would keep you safe. I was excited and terrified at the same time. I was partnered with sashko after we put on the safeties’ we had to walk up a tall high ladder that would bring me and shasko to the top to swing. At the very top our instructor called Katie was already there to make sure we were clipped on properly. A few minutes passes and we were ready to swing down so she told me and sashko to take 3 steps down and then we were already starting to swing down the terrifying flying fox. Me and sashko pretended to be birds and we even did a round of scissor, paper, rock. When we arrived at the bottom of the flying fox there was another instructor to catch us so we wouldn’t be stuck on top of the water when she got us down, she told us to walk back so we started to walk back from were we have started.

High Ropes by Nicolas

When we came to the little shelter that was next to the high ropes, our instructor Call (or Callum) told us to sit down on the uncomfortable benches. First, he told us all the necessary safety rules and he showed us where the dangerous drop zone was and how to put on a safety harness and helmet. There was a long flying fox and a cool high ropes course. Henry Syn went first. On the first activity we just had to balance across a short, thin rope. Some people fell; some didn’t. Then we had to walk past big obstacles (the whole time we were on a thin rope). After that there were to thin ropes tangled together, but we got past them. There were also some more balancing ropes and dodging obstacles. We had a choice; we could do two times high ropes or once high ropes and once flying fox. I did both things once. It was one of the most fun experiences I ever had. I advise you to try it!

Power Fan by Sasha

It was high. Scary. High. Did I mention that it was high? Pretty high. Well let me tell you. It was the Power Fan. I personally loved the Power Fan. This is me when I saw it. Yay I love it. It is scary and high. Love it. Scary that is exactly what I thought. Well, I did it. First you had to climb up a pole and it was high. So, when you where at the top there was a little platform then you had to jump down, and you were dead. I am joking you would just jump down and slowly fall until you were on your butt. I forgot one part. You were clipped on a harness.

Crate Climb by Ted

At camp, my favourite activity was “Crate Climb”. The climber is tied to a harness, and the below team pulls the climber up. A person passes crates to the climber. The climber makes a “ladder” to climb up higher. When I was the climber, I was scared, but also excited. As I got higher and higher, everyone beneath me seemed like they shrunk. The roofs of buildings started to show as I rose in altitude. Then I decided to jump down. Instead of falling, I glided like a bird, occasionally crashing into the wall of nets.
