In the last week of Term 2, the Years 11 and 12 IB visual art students attended a tour and workshop at the Art Galley of NSW new building. The students had the opportunity to delve into the ideas and processes behind Here Comes Everybody 2022 by Francis Upritchard, with close looking, inquiry-based conversation, and direct access to the artist’s working maquettes.

Who are the towering bronze beings that welcome visitors to the Art Gallery of New South Wales’ new building and how were they made?

The Artists at Work learning program connected students with the artist’s studio practice. The session combined observation and analysis of the newly commissioned artwork in-situ with a related art-making session designed by the artist in collaboration with the Art Gallery education team. The program is designed to promote an understanding of artist materials, processes, and decision-making in the studio.

The Year 11 and 12 GISS students were engaged, interested, and created some great spontaneous and imaginative work of their own. One of the highlights of my day was when the gallery educator told me that our school was one of the most creative groups she had worked with on this project. - Nicola Hartley, Art teacher
