The Creativity, Activity, Service Program is one of the core components of the IB Diploma Program.

All IB students have to be involved in creative, physical and service experiences, and projects in a local, national or international context for at least 18 months. The CAS Program is about the education of the IB students beyond the classroom and the emphasis is on learning by doing.

It encourages students to share their energies and talents while developing awareness, concern, and the ability to work cooperatively with others.

We are planning to feature various experiences and projects in upcoming issues of the Gutenberg Post to provide insight to our school community what CAS Experiences and CAS Projects our IB students are involved with.

Creativity Activity Service Program

Ulrike Miehle, CAS Coordinator and Year 11 CAS students

Throughout the two-year IB program, one of the core components of the IB is CAS also known as Creativity, Activity and Service. CAS is a core component of the IB that encourages students to develop their personal and interpersonal growth by learning through experience and by providing them opportunities to self-determination and collaboration with others. Within this program every student must complete various experiences and a CAS project. The CAS project must be at least a month long, it must be a purposeful activity with significant outcomes that is completed with a collaborative group and the project should be planned out by the group and reviewing progress.

In our CAS project, we participated in the Tennis AG, an activity for an external source, the Terrey Hills Tennis Club. In this AG it was our responsibility to teach the kids how to play tennis, while also making sure that we learnt all the correct techniques for teaching from our tennis Coach. This AG allowed us to tick off five of the seven CAS learning outcomes: Strength & Growth, Challenge & Skills, Initiative & Planning, Commitment & Perseverance and Collaborative Skills, while doing all three of the CAS strands, Creativity, Activity, Service.

In conclusion, our CAS project focused on the Tennis AG has been a valuable experience, teaching us the importance of extracurricular activities, participating in the community, skill development, and personal growth whilst also developing our skills as tennis coaches and working with younger students.

We strongly recommend doing an AG as an experience or even a CAS project to others as it taught us lots of valuable skills and is also a good CAS experience, participating in all 3 strands of CAS. We also recommend this as a CAS project as it will help you reach your potential, build connections, and contribute positively to the overall school culture.
