We are now well and truly into Term 2, and it has been wonderful to see our students diving back into rich learning both inside and outside the classroom. There is a real energy across the Primary School at the moment, and I hope that comes through in the updates below.
Student Leadership
Our Year 6 Primary Captains — including our Music and Sport Captains — recently spent a full day at a leadership workshop facilitated by UPP (Unleashing Personal Potential), taking part in their program Leading from the Front. Throughout the day, students explored what it means to lead with integrity and purpose. They learned how to communicate more effectively with their peers, how to build trust within a team, and how great leaders listen just as much as they speak. They also reflected on their own strengths and how to channel them in service of others — a powerful reminder that leadership is not about position, but about action.
And they have wasted no time putting those lessons into practice. Our captains' first leadership initiative is already underway: a Primary School Disco on Friday, 19th June! The students are organising everything themselves — from the music and venue to the food — and are working incredibly hard to make it a memorable event for our primary community. An invitation and sign-up can be found via Compass. We encourage all families to get behind our captains and support what promises to be a fantastic evening.
Learning and Experiences
Stage 1 — Community and Connection
Our Stage 1 students are deep into their Unit of Inquiry, People work together in connected ways and have responsibilities in their community / Menschen arbeiten auf vernetzte Weise zusammen und haben Verantwortung in ihrer Gemeinschaft.Through this unit, they are exploring big questions: What jobs do people do in our community? What do people do at their jobs? How do different jobs help us?
Learning has come to life through visits from community members — teachers and parents — who have generously come into the classroom to share their working lives with our students. Alongside this, students have been exploring gender roles and stereotypes, broadening their understanding of who does what and why. We are also thrilled to be welcoming the SES to campus, and are very much looking forward to our upcoming excursion to the Rural Fire Service. Real-world, community-connected learning at its best.
Stage 2 — How the World Works
Stage 2's Unit of Inquiry this term sits under the transdisciplinary theme How the World Works, with a strong environmental and sustainability focus centred on plastic. This unit has lent itself beautifully to cross-subject connections — through Science & Technology, Kunst (including working with recycled materials), and Mathematics through concepts of Längen und Körper. It is wonderful to see students making meaning across disciplines in such an integrated way.
Stage 3 — The Power of Music
Stage 3 took the reins at our most recent assembly and chose to centre it around a powerful theme: why music matters. And what an assembly it was. Research tells us that music builds neural pathways, strengthens memory, fosters emotional intelligence, and brings communities together — and our students brought every one of those ideas to life. We were treated to performances from our Senior Choir, Junior Rock Band, and Junior String Ensemble, and the results were simply magical. You could feel the impact of music in the room.
This moment connects beautifully to something we are enormously proud of: our Junior and Senior Choirs recently competed in the Sydney Eisteddfod for the very first time, and received outstanding praise from the judges. A remarkable achievement, and a testament to the dedication of our students and staff.
Complementing all of this, our Stage 2 and Stage 3 students attended a performance at the Sydney Opera House, where they learned about orchestras and the art of being an attentive, appreciative audience. A truly special experience.
GISS Athletics Carnival
What a day! Students in Years 3 –10 came together for our Athletics Carnival, and the spirit on display was truly something to be proud of. Our primary students gave their all across a full range of events – sprints, 200m and 400m distances, shot put, discus, and long jump – and whether they were competing or cheering, the sportsmanship, team spirit, and perseverance shown throughout the day was outstanding. Moments like these remind us what school community is all about.
Mother's Day Breakfast
Our Mother's Day Breakfast was a beautiful success. It was so lovely to see so many mums and special family members on campus, and the children were genuinely delighted to welcome their loved ones into the classroom for a special collaborative activity. Thank you to everyone who took the time to join us — your presence made it a truly memorable morning.

Und unsere Captains haben keine Zeit verloren, das Gelernte in die Praxis umzusetzen. Ihre erste große Initiative ist bereits in vollem Gange: eine Primary School Disco am Freitag, den 19. Juni! Die SchülerInnen organisieren die gesamte Veranstaltung selbst, von der Musik und dem Veranstaltungsort bis hin zum Essen, und arbeiten mit großem Engagement daran, einen unvergesslichen Abend für unsere Grundschulgemeinschaft zu gestalten. Eine Einladung sowie die Anmeldung finden Sie über Compass. Wir ermutigen alle Familien, unsere Captains zu unterstützen und Teil dieses sicherlich großartigen Abends zu werden.
Wir sind inzwischen mitten im zweiten Term angekommen, und es ist wunderbar zu sehen, mit wie viel Begeisterung sich unsere Schülerinnen und Schüler wieder auf das Lernen innerhalb und außerhalb des Klassenzimmers einlassen. Derzeit herrscht in der gesamten Grundschule eine spürbar positive und lebendige Atmosphäre, und ich hoffe, dass dies auch in den folgenden Beiträgen deutlich wird.
Unsere Year-6-Primary-Captains, darunter auch unsere Musik- und Sport-Captains, nahmen kürzlich an einem ganztägigen Leadership-Workshop teil, der von UPP (Unleashing Personal Potential) im Rahmen des Programms Leading from the Front durchgeführt wurde. Im Laufe des Tages setzten sich die SchülerInnen intensiv damit auseinander, was es bedeutet, mit Integrität und Zielbewusstsein zu führen. Sie lernten, wie sie effektiver mit ihren MitschülerInnen kommunizieren, Vertrauen innerhalb eines Teams aufbauen und dass gute Führungspersönlichkeiten ebenso gut zuhören wie sprechen können. Darüber hinaus reflektierten sie ihre eigenen Stärken und darüber, wie sie diese zum Wohl anderer einsetzen können, eine wertvolle Erinnerung daran, dass Führung nicht von einer Position abhängt, sondern vom eigenen Handeln.
GISS ATHLETICS CARNIVAL
Lernen und Erfahrungen
Stage 1 — Gemeinschaft und Zusammenhalt
Die SchülerInnen der Stage 1 arbeiten derzeit intensiv an ihrer Unit of Inquiry People work together in connected ways and have responsibilities in their community / Menschen arbeiten auf vernetzte Weise zusammen und haben Verantwortung in ihrer Gemeinschaft. Im Rahmen dieser Einheit beschäftigen sie sich mit spannenden und bedeutenden Fragen: Welche Berufe gibt es in unserer Gemeinschaft? Was machen Menschen in ihren Berufen? Und wie tragen unterschiedliche Berufe dazu bei, unsere Gemeinschaft zu unterstützen und zu stärken?
Das Lernen wurde besonders lebendig durch Besuche von Mitgliedern unserer Gemeinschaft –Lehrkräften und Eltern – die großzügig ihre Zeit geschenkt haben, um den SchülerInnen Einblicke in ihren Berufsalltag zu geben. Darüber hinaus setzen sich die Kinder mit Geschlechterrollen und Stereotypen auseinander und erweitern dabei ihr Verständnis davon, wer welche Aufgaben übernimmt und warum. Wir freuen uns außerdem sehr darauf, den SES bei uns auf dem Campus begrüßen zu dürfen, und blicken gespannt auf unseren bevorstehenden Ausflug zur Rural Fire Service. Ein wunderbares Beispiel für praxisnahes, gemeinschaftsorientiertes Lernen.
Stage 2 — Wie die Welt funktioniert
Die Unit of Inquiry der Stage 2 steht in diesem Term unter dem transdisziplinären Thema How the World Works und legt einen starken Schwerpunkt auf Umweltbewusstsein und Nachhaltigkeit mit dem Fokus auf Plastik. Diese Unterrichtseinheit bietet auf wunderbare Weise die Möglichkeit, verschiedene Fächer miteinander zu verknüpfen — etwa Science & Technology, Kunst (einschließlich Arbeiten mit recycelten Materialien) sowie Mathematik durch die Konzepte Längen und Körper. Es ist großartig zu sehen, wie unsere Schülerinnen und Schüler fachübergreifend Zusammenhänge erkennen und Lernen auf so ganzheitliche Weise erleben.
Stage 3 — Die Kraft der Musik
Die SchülerInnen der Stage 3 gestalteten die letzte Assembly eigenständig und stellten sie unter ein besonders bedeutungsvolles Thema: warum Musik wichtig ist. Und was für eine beeindruckende Assembly es war. Studien zeigen, dass Musik neuronale Verbindungen stärkt, das Gedächtnis fördert, emotionale Intelligenz entwickelt und Menschen miteinander verbindet — und genau diese Aspekte wurden durch unsere SchülerInnen eindrucksvoll zum Leben erweckt.
Wir durften Auftritte unseres Senior Choir, der Junior Rock Band sowie des Junior String Ensemble erleben, und die Darbietungen waren schlichtweg bezaubernd. Die Wirkung der Musik war im gesamten Raum spürbar. Dieser besondere Moment knüpft wunderbar an etwas an, worauf wir unglaublich stolz sind: Unsere Junior- und Senior-Chöre nahmen kürzlich erstmals am Sydney Eisteddfod teil und erhielten herausragendes Lob von der Jury. Eine bemerkenswerte Leistung und ein eindrucksvoller Beweis für das Engagement unserer SchülerInnen sowie unserer Lehrkräfte.
Ergänzend dazu besuchten die Stage 2 und Stage 3 SchülerInnen eine Aufführung im Sydney Opera House, bei der sie mehr über Orchester und die Kunst des aufmerksamen und wertschätzenden Zuhörens lernten. Eine wirklich besondere Erfahrung.
Was für ein großartiger Tag! Klassen 3 bis 10 kamen zu unserem Athletics Carnival zusammen, und der dabei gezeigte Teamgeist war wirklich beeindruckend. Die GrundschülerInnen gaben in einer Vielzahl von Disziplinen ihr Bestes , darunter 200-m- und 400-m-Läufe, Kugelstoßen, Diskuswurf und Weitsprung. Ganz gleich, ob sie selbst antraten oder ihre MitschülerInnen anfeuerten: Die Fairness, der Zusammenhalt und die Ausdauer, die den ganzen Tag über zu spüren waren, waren außergewöhnlich. Solche Momente zeigen, was eine starke Schulgemeinschaft ausmacht.

MUTTERTAGS FRÜHSTÜCK
Unser Frühstück für Muttertag war ein wunderbarer Erfolg. Es war schön zu sehen, wie viele Mütter und besondere Familienmitglieder unseren Campus besucht haben, und die Kinder waren sichtlich begeistert, ihre Liebsten für eine gemeinsame Aktivität im Klassenzimmer willkommen zu heißen. Vielen Dank an alle, die sich die Zeit genommen haben, dabei zu sein — Ihre Anwesenheit hat diesen Morgen zu einem ganz besonderen und unvergesslichen Erlebnis gemacht.

What is ANZAC day?
ANZAC day is a day where all Australians come together to commemorate those who have died fighting for Australia. In fact, ANZAC stands for Australian and New Zealand Army Corps. And on that day, schools from all around Sydney were there; army veterans, cadets and even the New Zealand consul general. I was honoured to see so many people gathered for this occasion in the everlasting ANZAC spirit – Marc
Why do We Commemorate Anzac Day?
We commemorate Anzac Day to take the time to honor and remember the 2 million Australians who fought and served since 1914, and to remember the 103,000 Australians that died fighting in Australia’s name. April 25 in 1915 marks the day when 16,000 Australians and New Zealanders landed in Gallipoli, and for most of them, it was their first fight. On that day over 2,000 of them had been killed or hurt, and even though the Gallipoli fight was a failure, it showed bravery, and being brave takes courage, and I think that for me, that’s the true win – Hannah
ANZAC March and Service - April 2026
An Anzac village is a special place that helps us remember the brave soldiers from Australia and New Zealand who fought in wars long ago. Anzac villages are important because they teach us about history in a way that feels real. When you visit one, you can see what life was like for soldiers and understand the struggles and challenges they faced. It helps us feel connected to the past. These places also bring communities together. This year, the Anzac Day memorial march and service was held at the RSL LifeCare ANZAC Village in Narrabeen. Anzac villages also remind us of important values like courage, mateship and respect. These are values that Australians and New Zealanders are very proud of and they are just as important today as they were over a hundred years ago. By visiting and learning about Anzac villages, we make sure that the stories of these soldiers are never forgotten. It is our way of saying, "We remember you." – Leo
What did we do there and why were we there?
On the 23rd of April, we went to an Anzac march at the RSL Anzac Village. As we arrived, we caught a glimpse of the band that would play while marching. We were all excited, but it turned out we were not allowed to march. That was because only war veterans and the band were able to participate in this event. Nevertheless, watching the march was still something I will never forget. As the group marched past the place we were standing and continued their way down to where the ceremony would be held, we also went down and took our seats. The ceremony started off with a lovely song by the veteran choir, next there were some speeches about why Anzac Day is so important. Soon we reached our big moment and part of the reason why we went. Our school was called, and we walked onto the stage and laid a beautiful wreath beside the many others that were placed before us. We then stood there for a few seconds, remembering all those soldiers who battled for peace and protection for the land we live on right now. years 3 - 6 excursion to royal botanic gardens and sydney opera house
On 29 April, students from Years 3 to 6 set off to the city for the day on Wednesday; they picnicked in the Royal Botanic Gardens before walking across to the Sydney Opera House to enjoy a Learning and Engagement concert presented by Sydney Symphony Orchestra. It was an amazing concert, with movements from Gustav Holst’s The Planets and a short film called “Fantasia Symphonique”, exploring the inside of a symphony orchestra and its movements.
Our students have been learning about the instruments and sounds of a symphony orchestra, and the concert presented a huge ensemble on-stage – something many students would otherwise rarely experience. It was a big and wonderful day out; one which most will remember for quite some time!!
ausflug zum royal botanic gardens und sydney opera house
Am Mittwoch, dem 29. April, machten sich SchülerInnen der Jahrgangsstufen 3 bis 6 zu einem Tagesausflug in die Stadt auf; sie picknickten im Royal Botanic Gardens, bevor sie zum Sydney Opera House gingen, um dort ein „Learning and Engagement“-Konzert des Sydney Symphony Orchestra zu genießen. Es war ein fantastisches Konzert mit Sätzen aus Gustav Holsts „The Planets“ und einem Kurzfilm namens „Fantasia Symphonique“, der einen Einblick in das Innenleben eines Sinfonieorchesters und dessen Funktionsweise bot.
Unsere SchülerInnen haben im Unterricht über Instrumente und Klänge eines Sinfonieorchesters gelernt, und das Konzert bot ein riesiges Ensemble auf der Bühne – etwas, das viele SchülerInnen sonst vielleicht nur selten erleben würden. Es war ein großartiger und wunderbarer Ausflug, an den sich die meisten noch lange erinnern werden!!
Senior Choir Day
On 24 April, singers from Years 3 to 6 had their annual Senior Choir Day at the Tramshed Arts & Community Centre. This event is a day of intense learning, music-making and fun, when students can focus purely on learning repertoire and building a choral sound culture in a happy team.
They have many performances coming up during the coming months, and now they have made a great start on what is to come. Our new Music teacher, Frau Daun assisted Frau Boubbov, and of course, Ms Valerie is always invaluable with her pianistic skills.
A lot of singing and playing, as well as the much-loved pizza lunch, made the day memorable, exhausting, and fun!
In den kommenden Monaten stehen viele Auftritte an, und nun haben sie einen großartigen Start hingelegt. Unsere neue Musiklehrerin, Frau Daun, unterstützte Frau Boubbov, und natürlich ist Frau Valerie mit ihren pianistischen Fähigkeiten immer von unschätzbarem Wert.
Viel Singen und Musizieren sowie das allseits beliebte Pizza-Mittagessen machten den Tag unvergesslich, anstrengend und unterhaltsam!
Senior Choir tAG
Am 24. April fand für die SängerInnen der Jahrgangsstufen 3 bis 6 der jährliche Senior Choir Day im Tramshed Arts & Community Centre statt. Diese Veranstaltung ist ein Tag voller intensiven Lernens, Musizierens und Spaßes, an dem sich die Schülerinnen und Schüler ganz darauf konzentrieren können, das Repertoire zu erlernen und in einem fröhlichen Team eine gemeinsame Klangkultur aufzubauen.
MUFFINS FOR MUMS
We hope all our wonderful mums and special family members had a very happy Mother’s Day this month!
We loved celebrating with our Primary School community at our Muffins for Mums event, alongside special activities in the classrooms. It was a beautiful way to recognise and appreciate all that our mums do.

MUFFINS FÜR MÜTTER
Es war uns eine große Freude, gemeinsam mit unserer Grundschulgemeinschaft bei unserer Veranstaltung „Muffins for Mums“ zu feiern, ergänzt durch besondere Aktivitäten in den Klassenzimmern. Es war eine schöne Art, all das zu würdigen und anzuerkennen, was unsere Mütter leisten.
On Monday 11th May, our Junior Choir represented GISS proudly at the Sydney Eisteddfod in the Concert Hall in The Course in Chatswood; an annual locally competition, attracting schools from the Sydney region and beyond.
GISS uses the Eisteddfod as a valuable performance experience where students can also see how other schools perform, focusing on having fun and doing our best. They sang beautifully and received very positive feedback, and although it wasn’t expected or prioritised as a goal, our Junior Choir won 2nd Prize in the Infants Choir (K-2) section. We are very proud!

Senior Choir
On Tuesday 12th May, our Senior Choir participated in the Sydney Eisteddfod, representing GISS against 7 other schools from the Sydney region and being awarded a Highly Commended placing. It was an exciting experience for all involved; performing on the stage in the Concert Hall of The Concourse in Chatswood is something that will surely remain in their memories for a long time to come. Our students sang “Giant of the Forest” and “the Great Emu War”, two beautiful Australian choral pieces, which were commented upon positively by the adjudicator.
As always, our students showed that they can rise to an occasion, carrying themselves with dignity, self-discipline, courage and focus when it was needed. A huge thanks to our incredible accompanist, Valerie Forbes-Mavridis, and our Eisteddfod support team, Frau Boubbov, Mrs Clark, Ms Ahwee and Frau Thelen.
Junior Choir
Last week, our amazing GISS students from Years 3–10 took to the up the track and field at the GISS Athletics Carnival — and what a spectacular day it was!
From strong performances in Long Jump, Shot Put and Discus to exciting races across the 100m, 200m, 400m and 800m events, our students competed with determination, enthusiasm and outstanding GISS spirit, dressed proudly in their House colours. It was wonderful to see students supporting one another, celebrating achievements and giving every event their very best effort. A huge thank you to the parents who came along to cheer on our athletes and help create such a positive and energetic atmosphere.
Special thanks also go to our Sport Coordinators, Mr Crundwell and Frau Puerzel, for their fantastic organisation, and to all the staff who helped make the day such a fun and successful event.

Letzte Woche nahmen unsere GISS-SchülerInnen der Klassen 3 bis 10 am GISS Athletics Sportfest teil und was für ein toller Tag das war!
Von starken Leistungen im Weitsprung, Kugelstoßen und Diskuswurf bis hin zu spannenden Rennen über 100 m, 200 m, 400 m und 800 m zeigten unsere SchülerInnen großen Einsatz, Begeisterung und einen beeindruckenden GISS-Teamgeist – stolz gekleidet in den Farben ihrer Houses. Es war sehr schön zu sehen, wie sich die SchülerInnen gegenseitig unterstützten, Erfolge gemeinsam feierten und ihr Bestes gaben. Ein herzliches Dankeschön geht auch an alle Eltern, die unsere AthletInnen begeistert angefeuert und zu der positiven und lebhaften Atmosphäre beigetragen haben.
Ein besonderer Dank gilt außerdem unseren SportkoordinatorInnen Mr Crundwell und Frau Puerzel für die hervorragende Organisation sowie allen Mitarbeitenden, die dazu beigetragen haben, diesen Tag zu einem so gelungenen und tollen Ereignis zu machen.
athletics CARNIVAL
Ready for Take-Off: Year 1 & 2 Meet a Real Pilot!
Today, our Year 1 and 2 students were cleared for take-off as they welcomed a very special guest, one of our dads, Captain Ditz. After an exciting game of “Guess the Profession,” the children discovered they were speaking with a real pilot. Captain Ditz shared a fascinating presentation about how planes work, what it takes to become a pilot, and the highs and lows of life in the skies.
The students were full of curiosity, asking and answering plenty of questions along the way. In fact, some of their impressive knowledge about aerodynamics even surprised our pilot!
A huge thank you to Captain Ditz for such an engaging, informative, and fun-filled visit. We loved having you on board!
Heute erhielten unsere SchülerInnen der 1. und 2. Klasse die Startfreigabe, als sie einen ganz besonderen Gast begrüßen durften , einen unserer Väter, Captain Ditz. Nach einem spannenden Spiel „Errate den Beruf“ fanden die Kinder heraus, dass sie mit einem echten Piloten sprachen. Captain Ditz hielt eine faszinierende Präsentation darüber, wie Flugzeuge funktionieren, was man tun muss, um Pilot zu werden, und welche Höhen und Tiefen das Leben über den Wolken mit sich bringt.
Die SchülerInnen waren voller Neugier und stellten und beantworteten begeistert viele spannende Fragen. Tatsächlich überraschte ihr zum Teil beeindruckendes Wissen über Aerodynamik sogar unseren Piloten!
Ein herzliches Dankeschön an Captain Ditz für diesen so spannenden, informativen und unterhaltsamen Besuch. Wir haben uns sehr gefreut, Sie an Bord zu haben!
