On the 7th of June, the Year 11 students embarked on a CAS trip to Fiji. After a four-hour flight and a three-hour drive, we finally arrived at our accommodation in Rakiraki. Early Saturday morning, we headed to the Nabalesere village, where we were warmly welcomed by the locals. We had the chance to experience their culture, including drinking kava, wearing sulus, and enjoying their traditional food. We then hiked to a stunning waterfall, where we participated in a project to test the water quality in the area.
Sunday was a rest day filled with various activities like swimming, kayaking, playing pool, and engaging in a murder mystery game in two groups. On Monday, we visited Rakiraki High School and met some of the girls supported by our school charity, ‘a Girl and her world’.
We interacted with their students through arts and crafts workshops, baking, soccer, and a Trivia quiz. Later, we were welcomed into the home of Urmila, the in-country coordinator of a Girl and her world. Her family and several supported girls prepared a traditional Indo-Fijian meal for us, and Urmila explained the connection between the organisation and the school.
On Tuesday, we drove to Nadi to meet with our IB partner school, International School Nadi (ISN). We received a traditional welcome from the entire school and met the exchange students we would be staying with for the next two nights. Wednesday was dedicated to a full day of community service at a children’s home, where we helped with tasks such as ploughing fields, gardening, cleaning, and sorting out furniture.
The following day, we set up our tents at school, participated in a combined TOK session, and spent the afternoon at the beach for a beach cleanup and team-building games. Our last night was at the school, enjoying a bonfire, singing, and roasting marshmallows. Early the next morning, we departed for Sydney, saying goodbye to our hosts with their traditional farewell song.
It was a great trip where we learned a lot and had the opportunity to bond with our classmates and hosts from ISN. Special thanks to our supervising teachers, Mrs Hessling, Mrs Miehle and Mr. Winoto for organising this trip and spending their time with us. - Daniel C, Year 11
