Our Year 12 students organized an amazing muck-up day on their last day of school before the holidays. Staff and students had to enter through the sports field due to blocked entrances, but that didn’t stop anyone being swept into a lively dance party— not even the pouring rain could stop the fun!

The excitement continued with a dodgeball game in the sports hall where students and staff challenged each other. To add to the fun of the day, the 'principal’s' car was spray-painted, and he got doused with buckets of water—all in good humour!

In the annual IB Soccer Cup, the staff triumphed over the Year 12s this year with a score of 6-3, but that didn’t dampen the students’ spirits. They were honoured during the farewell assembly in the sports hall, where they received their transcripts along with lovely good luck charms for their IB exams, handcrafted by the Year 3/4 students.

As the entire school clapped them out, the students joined their families for a farewell afternoon tea before starting their study break. We wish them all the best for their final exams and are keeping our fingers crossed for them.

what a fabulous muck up day!

good luck!!

IB SHOWCASE WEEK - ENGINEERING WITHOUT BORDERS STEM WORKSHOP

On Monday of Week 9 GISS senior students participated in a UNSW outreach Engineering without borders STEM workshop. The following activities occurred:

Prosthetic Leg: a biomedical engineering activity where students worked in small teams to design and build their own prosthetic leg from common household materials. Students attempted to walk using their makeshift prosthetic leg, giving them an appreciation for the challenges real people in these situations would face.

Renewable energy: a renewable energy engineering activity where students created a prototype wind turbine that could be tested to show LED lights glowing proportionally to the energy generated.

Code For Disaster Relief: electrical/software engineering activity where students built an electric circuit and wrote code to program an Arduino that emulates a search and rescue device.

Safe structures: a humanitarian engineering activity where students were able to plan and design a tower structure that considered maximising both height and structural integrity to be able to remain intact after going through simulated flood, earthquake and cyclone simulation tests. Students needed to consider the design factors of durable infrastructure for individuals affected by extraordinary natural disasters around the world.

This workshop saw both Year 11 and 12 students working collaboratively to deliver their model and were also interacting well with the university presenters.

Year 10 students were introduced to all things CAS by the Year 12 students, who were delivering this workshop with dedication, commitment and great tips for the Year 10’s.

They had various activities to complete and rotated around each of the Year 12 presenters and they came together at the end for an overview of all the groups different ideas.

CAS WORKSHOP - INTRODUCING THE YEAR 10 Students TO CAS

The Year 11 students produced a stop-motion video retelling the story of "Rapunzel," which they showcased during German Day. The presentation was a great success, particularly for the younger students. The Year 11 students can take pride in their collaboration and the tremendous effort they invested in this project, from creating the background scenery to developing the story and performing their work on the day of the event.

year 11 create a stop-motion video

showcase week

The IB Showcase Week is a vital component of the IBDP, allowing students to present their final projects in displays and presentations. It provides an opportunity for them to reflect critically on their learning experiences and offers junior secondary students a preview of the senior secondary journey that awaits them.

During the Showcase Week this year, we welcomed alumnus Martin Bates from our Class of 2018, who shared his insights on the challenges and advantages of the IBDP as a graduate who chose to study his undergraduate degree in Business & Economics at the Freie Universität in Berlin, followed by his Masters in Sustainable Finance at Utrecht in the Netherlands.

ib art exhibition

Overall, the IB art exhibition was a very enjoyable and a vital learning experience for all involved and  the GISS community was equally impressed with the amount of work the students had put in and how it all unfolded.

I would like to personally congratulate the Year 12 students on their efforts and thank everyone else who was involved. Congratulations!

Melinda Jordi, Art teacher

The Year 12 Visual Art students of 2024 put together a highly impressive art exhibition which showcased their work they have been doing over the last two years.

For HL students, there was a large collection of nostalgic memories, intersections of physics and the human experience, an interpretation of the juxtaposition between war and tranquillity, with aesthetically crafted influences of Ukrainian folk art and personal responses to this.

The SL students produced a body of work which were thought provoking scenes on consumerism, well manipulated pieces on different perspectives, aiming to challenge how viewers interpret visual experiences, and a comprehensive look at cultural experiences, sense of place, identity and memory.

The Creativity, Activity, Service Program is one of the core components of the IB Diploma Program.

All IB students have to be involved in creative, physical and service experiences, and projects in a local, national or international context for at least 18 months. The CAS Program is about the education of the IB students beyond the classroom and the emphasis is on learning by doing.

It encourages students to share their energies and talents while developing awareness, concern, and the ability to work cooperatively with others.

We are planning to feature various experiences and projects in upcoming issues of the Gutenberg Post to provide insight to our school community what CAS Experiences and CAS Projects our IB students are involved with.

Making a Difference: Beach Clean ups

As a part of the ‘service’ strand for the CAS component of our IB Diploma Programme, we regularly participate in beach clean ups held by the organisation Emu Parade. This is an organisation that strives to make a positive impact on our environment - with a twist, that is. All you need to do to participate is show up at the proposed location during the right time with your favourite keep cup, pick up a bucket and grabber tool, fill the bucket with rubbish and receive a free coffee or other preferred hot drink in return. Great, right?

These clean ups make a big difference in our future on this planet and help with ridding the beaches from pollution, even if it’s just temporary. It is important for people to engage in this activity regularly, as in time, it could make a huge impact on the environment. Additionally, this activity always makes us feel more accomplished and connected with nature, which is great motivation to wake up early and drive to the beach to feel productive. Removing harmful waste with other people in the morning can protect marine life and improve water quality, but also fosters a sense of community among the participants. By visibly taking part in this effort, volunteers can encourage others to adopt more sustainable practices.

We have been taking part in these clean ups since April of this year and although we also benefit from it by gaining an experience for our IB CAS journey, we are glad to be making a small but meaningful contribution to the betterment of environmental pollution. That being said, many hands make light work, so we encourage anyone who is willing and able to take part in the Emu Parade movement to do so.

The next clean up is planned for Sunday, the 27th of October at Avalon Beach from 7:00 to 10:00 am, we’d love to see you there!
